Dreamer - Human Don't Be Angry
Human Don't Be Angry is the pseudonym of Scottish indie rocker Malcolm Middleton, who you may know for being one half of the late Arab Strap. Middleton has adopted his pseudonym after announcing in 2009 whilst promoting his solo album, Waxing Gibbous, "I'm starting to feel like I've done as much as I can with this creative voice."
So, the question is, what will Malcolm's new 'creative voice' be like? Well, not too dissimilar to Arab Strap in that the track often starts from nothing and evolves through different themes, but, well, it's just a bit more indie.
In Dreamer, HDAB alternates between two sections: the first a dreamy (see what I did there?), slower theme, which, with its 'da-da-da-da' lyrics, reminded me of summer nights spent singing along to your favourite song in your hot, sweaty, small venue of choice. The second theme is more upbeat, with lyrics detailing... well, you can interpret it how you want, but I thought the lyrics were really a nice ode to teenage dreams and awkwardness. This, in addition to the sing along style 'da-da-da-da's, is what makes it as much fun as it is.
Out this week on Chemikal Underground.
